Signs and symptoms of steroid abuse

•    rapid weight gain with pronounced muscle mass

•    shakes or tremors
•    change in attitude (aggressiveness, mood swings)
•    hair loss in males, excessive hair growth in females

•    Psychological problems. This set of side effects are attributed to hormonal imbalance that occur during steroid abuse. When an individual abuses steroids, there is usually fluctuation in testosterone levels that can cause mood swings, heightened aggression, paranoia, among others. These can be more pronounced during withdrawal from steroid abuse since the individual also has to contend with other issues, such as loss of size and strength (which can lead to low self-esteem) due to cessation of steroid intake.

Who’s likely to abuse steroids


The majority of steroid abusers are young, male athletes. Additionally, athletes who are engaged in sports that require speed, power, and stamina, are prone to abuse steroids. Bodybuilders are, of course, the usual suspects of steroid abuse for obvious reasons.

Adolescents can also abuse steroids, particularly those who want to hasten the onset of puberty and maturation of appearance. In some cases, kids abuse steroids because of peer pressure.

Regular people who are after personal enhancement may also abuse steroids. This group of individuals takes these compounds for weight-control and body-fat reduction.
