 Objectives:

 

To have students gain an understanding of the constantly changing role of the office professional in the workplace of today.  This course focuses on the following skills necessary in all offices (both large and small):

1.      Be a productive member of an office team

2.      Behave ethically

3.      Process information via technology
Communicate effectively – both orally and in writing

4.      Process mail

5.      Manage records

6.      Assist in the preparation of meetings

7.      Prepare travel arrangements

8.      Complete job searches

9.      Advance on the job

10.  Lead and supervise others

 

 

PLEASE NOTE: You are encouraged to bring your laptop to school for taking notes and participating in class. Do not create any type of INTERNET CONNECTION unless asked to by the professor. Any violation of this will result in your dismissal from the classroom.

 

All assignments must be printed out PRIOR to arriving to class as there is no Network connection allowed in class. No late assignments will be accepted, regardless of whether the student attends class or not. No makeup tests will be given except in extraordinary circumstances as determined by the instructor. All homework and projects will be typewritten and neat. All problems will be completed on the computer unless otherwise instructed. Students are urged to see their instructor to discuss problems that may arise or to gain assistance with class work.

 

Attendance is expected at all class sessions. Penalties procedures for not attending class stipulate that if you miss more than 3 (three) classes, for any reason, you may be asked to withdraw from the class or you may be given an automatic F.  Please note, if you are late for class, it is your responsibility to ensure that the instructor has marked you present in class at the end of that session. Your attendance for that day will be added; however, it will be noted as a Late Arrival.  The student should contact the instructor in advance when an absence is necessary.  The student is responsible for all material covered and assignments given when absent from class are the homework assigned will still be due within the original homework due date.  (No homework extensions are granted due to class absence.)  You may e-mail instructor to get homework assigned for that day.   Class participation and discussions will be heavily considered in determining your final grade, as this is part of the learning process.

Homework assignments (English Usage/Vocabulary sheets)       --                     25%

Projects (incl. Chapter assignments, oral presentation, resume assignment)         25%

Class Participation/Attitude/Professionalism/Attendance             --                     25%

 

Professionalism – Attitude, Attendance contributes greatly in overall grade.  Remember you are being prepared to become an office professional – treat others as you want yourself to be treated within an office.
