Four weeks progress report (June 9th 2008 – July 6th, 2008).

Submitted by

Dr. Adam Khan, HEC Visiting Scholar, State University of New York at Morrisville, NY

Projects Pursued:

During my 4 weeks stay at Gomal University, I pursued the following projects for the Faculty of Agriculture plus university as a whole:

1.      Taught several faculty members in Faculty of Agriculture how to use WebCt (a new state of the art technology) in teaching on line courses to graduates and undergraduates.  I also submitted a request to the administration to purchase software to install at the campus.  I also gave the written procedure to each faculty member on how to use WebCt (copy attached).  This will be a new technology at Gomal University and may be the only campus in NWFP or even Pakistan with WebCt capability.

2.      The following 6 topics were discussed with Ph. D. students and also Ph.D. faculty members:

a.       GIS and precision farming

b.       Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation and environmental laws in the U.S.

c.       Soil and nutrient management

d.      Land and water management

e.       Treatment of waste water – cheap technology

f.       Development of wet land

3.      Advised several Ph.D. students on their research projects.

4.      GIS maps of Gomal University’s new campus were developed for the Ph.D. students to identify location of their research projects in their research publications.

5.      Reviewed and evaluated the research papers of agriculture faculty and post graduate students for the Gomal University Journal of Research (HEC recognized journal).

6.      Attended several seminars of Ph.D. and M. Phil students and made recommendation on making effective power point presentations.

7.      Met with several faculty members and discussed possible topics of research that could be pursued jointly.

8.      Discussed with the co-author, Dr. Muhammad Qasim Khan, the following 2 books we wrote together:

a.       Khan, Adam and Muhammad Qasim Khan. 2008. Introduction to Soil Physics, Genesis, and Classification. Published by Pearson Publishing Company in USA.

b.      Khan, Adam and Muhammad Qasim Khan. 2008. Introduction to Soil Chemistry and Fertility. Published by Pearson Publishing Company in USA.

9.      Help one Ph.D. faculty write a grant proposals on Center of Excellence of Crops, Soil, Environment, and Water

10.  Proposed ideas to one Ph.D. student on how to select certain variety of sugar cane using Growing Degree Days (GDD)

11.  Discussed linkage program between Gomal University and Land Grant Universities in the U.S. We also discussed possibility of joint supervision of Ph.D. students and faculty exchange.

12.  Helped Ph.D. students how to write review papers for publications.

13.  Wrote the course requirements for B.Sc, Msc, and Ph.D. of each discipline and put it on the web page.

14.  Took digital pictures of each faculty member and briefly wrote their CV next to their picture and then placed the pictures in the web page.

15.  Met with the web page designer to make sure that the web pages were accurately linked.

16.  Took pictures of students while they worked on their research projects and put the pictures on the picture board of web page.

17.  Wrote the first summary annual report for the university (copy attached).

18.  Wrote the web pages for the following departments:

a.       Faculty of Agriculture

b.      Department of Agronomy

c.       Department of Entomology

d.      Department of Soil Science

e.       Department of Food Technology

f.       Department of Horticulture

g.      Department of PBG

h.      Department of Basic Sciences

19.  Took digital pictures of each construction project and put these pictures on the cover of the report.

How to use and develop material for webct

By Dr. Adam Khan, State University of New York, College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville

Introduction:

Webct is a web based teaching software.  With this software the teacher easily designs a web page on class material that he/she wants to teach.  The students who are in the class get a pass word and account to access this web page. These account numbers and pass words are distributed to the students by the system administrator at the computer center.  The system administrator also rights to the students where they cannot make changes to the content of the web page. The faculty member also gets a pass word and account number but has the right to design the web page.  Only the faculty member has the rights to the web page and nobody can make changes to the web page.   This web page can be used to teach on line courses where the students have access to the course material, the teacher notes, notices, syllabi, and anything the teacher chooses to display on the web page.  The students do not have to come to the class room and learn the material by reading the notes and other material the teacher puts for them to read.   Webct can also be used for distance learning.

How to post material on the webct web page

·         To access the webct web page, type the address http://................. And then click “enter”

·         The web page prompts for “account and pass word”. Type your pass word and account (that the webct administrator would give you) like you would do for your e-mail and then click “enter”

·         The web page gives you the semester and the list of courses that are taught in that semester. High light the course and then click.

000_0291.JPG

·         you will get the course page blank with some titles (empty with no information as an example)

000_0292.JPG

·         There are 2 options on this page, one for the teacher to design the web page “designer option” and the other for the students and the teacher to view the content of the web page “View” option. By clicking on “view” you will get the web page where you will be able to click on any item and see the information in that item.

·         If you want to add an item in the web page, you will need the designer web page as given above.

·         On the designer web page, you double click on “add page or tool“, 000_0293.JPG

·         This will give you the following page

000_0294.JPG

·         If you want to add a file (developed in html) or a picture in “Jpg” format, you click on “single page” as is given in above picture, you will get the following page.  On this page, you enter the title of the page in line 1.  For line 2, you click on “brouse”. 000_0295.JPG

·         You will get another screen where it will ask you to click on “browse” again to locate the html or jpg file.

·         Once you click on “browse”, it will take you to “C” drive or whatever location your html or jpg file is saved.

·         You highlight the folder and click on it and you will see a list of files from which you will choose the file you need:

·         You highlight the file and then click “open”. A new screen with a “file name” on left side of “browse” will appear

·         On this screen, click on “upload” to upload the file to list of files given in the list above. This file will be automatically marked to be loaded to the web page.

·         Then click on “add”, the file will be added to webct.

How to change the banner where you put announcements

·         On the design page, click under customize “modify/add banner image”.

·                  This will give you a page you will be able to modify the banner and add announcements etc.

·               In order to put announcements on upper or lower end of the page you first lighten the item

·            The click on “upper text” or “lower text” and you will get a page to make changes.
