BLOOMSDAY 2019
in Syracuse, New York,
- 26th Annual "Bloomsday" Celebration -
at Nisby's Pub, Sunday, June 16th 2019

The 26th Bloomsday celebration, a reading of select passages from James Joyce's towering novel Ulysses, will be presented by the Syracuse James Joyce Club on Father's Day for the first time. "In the past we've always celebrated the day before when June 16, the day in 1904 when the novel is actually set, occurs on Father's Day. This year we decided to honor the relationship with a celebration of those episodes which feature fathers," said Burton Thomas, chair of this year's observation. "We plan to present the Episodes Telemachus, Hades, Sirens, and Penelope " Thomas said.

This year's observance will feature readings from 4 till 9 pm at Nibsy's Pub, 201 Ulster Street, Syracuse, said Marian Stanton, SJJC president. "Parking is available around the pub and across the street nearby, and Nibsy's can be located on most phone or GPS devices. A special menu will be offered, and food and drink will be available for purchase throughout the day," she said. There is no admission charge.

The SJJC and Bloomsday, named for the everyman Leopold Bloom, hero of Ulysses--considered by many to be the best novel of the 20th century--joins with Joyce societies around the world in honoring the anniversary of its setting on June 16, 1904, chosen by Joyce because it was the day he first "walked out" with Nora Barnacle, the woman who shared his life and later became his wife. Bloomsday recounts the wandering of Dublin Jew Leopold Bloom, Molly his wife, and Stephen Dedalus, Joyce's alter-ego, as they live that single day from an early morning scene in a Martello tower on the Dublin coast to Molly's middle-of-the-night reveries on her life and marriage in an unforgettable stream-of-consciousness tour de force.

The Syracuse James Joyce Club currently has eighty-eight members. With fortnightly meetings, it is one of the most active James Joyce clubs among 55 globally. Although there were nine people present at the founding meeting on the anniversary of Joyce's death, January 13th, 1994, it was founded by a 'father and son' team, well, in the metaphorical sense of Stephen Dedalus and his spiritual father and faithful friend, Leopold Bloom! The 'father' was Dick Long, a former Washington DC and Syracuse newspaperman, writer and TV producer. The 'son' part of the 'family' is Tom Lavoie. When he worked at Syracuse University Press, it was Tom's gentle, scholarly manner that led the neophytes through the beginning of Ulysses.
